What is Pulsed Electrostatic Field (PESF) stimulation?
PESF stimulation works by delivering impulses of electric current to the body through a dielectric (insulating) barrier.
Common uses cases for PESF include muscle and tendon injury recovery, skin injury recovery, pain management, neuromodulation, and muscle toning/training.
A metallic contact on the interior of the applicator plate couples the pulses into any conductive material (e.g., skin) on the exterior of the applicator plate.
This is distinctly different from pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) stimulation, which uses pulses of electric current to remotely induce current flows deep within the body through magnetic induction.
Advantages of PESF over traditional conductive TENS/EMS include:
- No consumable sticky pad electrodes.
- Uniformly distributed current over the applicator-to-skin contact area.
- Higher intensity impulses for stronger muscle and nerve activation.
- Zero net charge due to dielectric barrier.
- Air ionization near the applicator surface (potentially useful for wound and skin applications).
Advantages of PESF over PEMF include:
- Focused application of energy without undesirable deep structure stimulation.
- Clinician-in-the-loop stimulation (active electrical massage) capable.
- Lower applicator temperature rise than PEMF applicators.
- Lower acoustic noise than PEMF applicators.
